In today's world of go, go, go, we all need ways to relax and re-set. Coloring does just that, it calms the nerves, and provides adults and children with a healthy coping mechanism when needed. How does coloring soothe the soul? Read on to find out!

1. It re-focuses and distracts! When emotions feel intense, sometimes people need to refocus their attention on something positive and calming. Coloring does just that. When we are distracted and re-focused, we spend less time focusing on negativity, and more time calming down.

2. It's relaxing!
Coloring requires little effort, and one doesn't need to be artistically talented to participate. Simply put, it's soothing and relaxing.

3. It's a healthy activity! There's nothing worse then hearing a child say they are bored! Furthermore, when children do not have structure or activities to participate in, they may be tempted to participate in dangerous activities and/or get into trouble. Coloring is a safe activity and outlet for children and adults alike, so how can that not be good for the soul?

4. It stimulates creativity!
Creativity encourages self-expression, and may be defined as the use of imagination or original ideas. When one colors, they are determining color schemes, and using organizational skills. They are in charge of their final masterpiece and as a result, they get to soak up the good feelings associated with a proud accomplishment. Sounds like candy for the soul to me.

5. It encourages self-esteem and confidence! Art is subjective, and therefore every piece does not need to be perfect in order to be appreciated. The beauty of coloring is that one can turn a mistake into something desired, or simply start over if wanted instead. The more one colors, the stronger one's technique becomes, and the more self-esteem is built. Confidence, positive thinking and positive feelings may then fill the soul.

So if you are looking for a way to relax, de-escalate big emotions, stimulate creativity, or begin a new hobby, coloring may be the answer for you!

As a teacher, parent, or specialist, we've all experienced times when children are simply unable to manage big emotions. Perhaps anxiety, a disagreement, embarrassment, or something else led a child to experience big emotions, and now we are scrambling to put out the fire. Our heart goes out to this child as we try our best to deescalate the situation, while also maintaining our own composure and emotions.

An easy way to help children calm down, is to teach basic coping skills. Children may practice coping skills anytime their emotions have become too big for them manage. And with enough practice, these skills may eventually become second nature.

Here are some coping skills to practice with children:

take deep breaths

focus on awesomeness

relax muscles

read a book

color a picture

talk to a friend

exercise

count to ten

listen to music

think in a quiet place

hug a pillow

Since big emotions are sometimes a part of life, and it may take children some time to develop healthy coping skills, I came up with a unique tool to help students and teachers in the process.

We are all familiar with desk plates, or name tags. Many times, students will have a desk plate near the top of their desk which includes their name and sometimes a number line, alphabet, or other helpful academic tools for them to look at and use when needed. Therefore it occurred to me, why not have desk plates that have coping skills on them? That way whenever a child feels anxious about a test, frustrated about a situation with a friend, shy to answer a question, upset they weren't chosen in class, embarrassed about getting the answer wrong, angry, or is experiencing any strong emotion for any reason, they can look at their desk plate, and pick a coping skill to practice at that time.

I believe the more children know about what to do when confronted with large emotions, the better choices they will make at that time and in the future.

I sincerely hope these desk plates are helpful to children. They come in many designs, and here are a few...
I love decorating the house for the holidays, and over the weekend, my crafty side made itself known! I wanted to spruce up the house a bit, but I didn't want to buy any materials or new decor to make that happen. Therefore, this is what my sometimes resourceful, budget friendly self came up with...

1. Stockings Hung from Ribbon on the Staircase- No mantel to hang the stocking from? No problem. Why not hang the stockings from the stair railing? At first, I thought I would use garland, but then I realized, I no longer owned any Christmas garland. So I grabbed a handful of decorative ribbons and tulle from my Christmas bin in the garage, and got to work! In between the stockings, I hung large ornaments or Christmas decor.

2. Santa Wreath- I needed something for my front door, and was inspired to make a crafty Santa looking wreath, but I didn't have all the materials needed to make the wreath, so the base of the wreath was made from a large cardboard circle that I cut out from an old unused box. I covered the circle in tulle, and stapled pieces of rolled up tulle onto the wreath. I used an old belt that no longer fit my son for Santa's belt, (but I may update this in the future with a more "Santa looking" belt). I printed out "ho ho ho" on glossy photo paper, cut out the letters, and hot glued them to the tulle. I finished the look with a Santa's hat that I happened to have on hand, and hot glued it to the tulle.

3. A Collage of Santa Pictures- I found a holiday photo book that was being unused, and decided to give it a use, (but any frame that holds multiple pictures would work for this project). I printed out pics that my kids took with Santa throughout the years, and placed them in the book. I used stickers in the shape of small red strips, to divide existing photo frames into smaller sized photo frames, which accommodated for all the years needed. To finish the project, I used number stickers, and a permanent marker to mark each year the picture was taken.

4. Life-Size Advent Calendar- Ok, this project was a bit more complex, was actually completed the previous weekend, and did involve a shopping trip, but it was still resourceful and budget friendly! It involved using an old TV box, dollar store gift boxes, gift bags, greeting cards, ribbon, and holiday signs. Attending holiday events, shopping for gifts, preparing holiday meals, decorating the house, and spending time with family, are just some of the reasons the holidays are precious to me.

This year, while I was getting my holiday mojo on, I was inspired to make my kids an advent calendar. Hmmm. I didn't know how I was going to make it, but I knew it was going to involve getting rid of an old tv box that had been taking up too much space in my garage for way too long! So my desire to purge a little, mixed with my holiday mood, resulted in an epic life-sized advent calendar!

Want to make one? If so, save yourself some money by hitting the dollar store, (at least that's what I did), and pick up these items.

Here's what you need...

large TV box (I used a 50")

a variety of containers (I used plastic containers and gift boxes)

holiday cards and holiday gift bags

decorative items (ribbon, stickers, holiday signs, decorative tape, etc.)

number stickers

contact paper

tape

glue gun and glue sticks

pencil

permanent marker

X-acto knife or other cutting tool

Step 1: Prepare TV box, (or other large cardboard box), by wiping any dust and debris away, and taping sides shut. Cover in contact paper.

Step 2: Prepare plastic containers by covering lids with greeting cards, cut or folded gift bags. Glue cards or bags to the lids using a hot glue gun. This will create a festive look. Decorated gift boxes may be used as is.

Perhaps that was due to my mother's influence on my childhood, and her father's influence on her childhood.

Practicing good manners teaches responsibility, and leads to respect. When people are polite, they feel good about themselves and others. When parents see their children behaving in a polite manner, they feel pride. When
students are courteous to classmates, educators feel joy and a sense of accomplishment. Furthermore, people listen and respect those who behave in a polite manner.

Because we all appreciate good manners in our personal, professional, and daily lives, we should teach children to behave in a polite manner too.

Here is a list of 8 important manners every child should know:

1. Provide Eye Contact - It's polite to look at someone when they are talking to you.

2. Practice Good Table Manners -

Do not slurp

Eat with your mouth closed

Place your napkin on your lap

Wipe your mouth with a napkin if needed

Take small bites

Sit properly

Wait to eat until everyone has been seated

Use indoor voices and a polite tone when speaking

3. Be a Good Listener - Remember to ask questions, not to interrupt, and to show interest.

4. Make a Good First Impression - Introduce yourself in a friendly and polite manner, and practice good self-care including taking pride in your appearance.

5. Respect the Personal Space of Others - Keep your hands and feet to yourself, and provide appropriate personal space.

Adjusting to a new lifestyle isn't always easy...even when changes are necessary.

This is the story of a silver lining that developed out of a somewhat hard transition in life.

A few years ago, my children and I moved. We were lucky. We still were able to live near extended family. We were lucky. We were able to find a safe neighborhood to reside in that was located near a desirable new school. We were lucky. We had a roof over our heads. We were lucky. We had each other. We were lucky.

Our move consisted of downsizing into a small rental that was 1/3 the size of our previous residence. In addition to smaller living quarters, our backyard was a thing of the past...since we no longer had one. Our neighbor's dwellings were so close that we could nearly touch them when reaching outside the window. But we were safe and we were together, so we were lucky.

And...we were finally able to get Bentley, our new puppy! The kids, Bentley, and I found four neighborhood parks within walking distance from our new residence. So we had exercise, fresh air, and a playful pup. We were lucky.

And since there weren't any backyards to hide out in, all the neighborhood kids
found each other in the open areas of our new neighborhood. So my kids
made new friends, and learned how to ride bikes too. We had laughter, and we were lucky.

And here's the silver lining....Gratitude. It was the gift of gratitude
that somehow came out of a maturing new family unit. And money was
the driving force in this formation.

For even though we were lucky, we had a new restricted budget. That's
where discipline came in. Gone were the days of careless spending, and
buying too much of everything! Hello were the days of responsibility
knocking at our door.

First task was to look at the budget. A LOT of our money went to groceries each month. I wondered if it was it really necessary to spend that much money each month. Only one way to find out...spend less! So that is what we did.

We rarely ate out, since that activity ate up a chunk of our money, (no pun intended), and it wasn't very healthy either.

We also adjusted how often we would grocery shop. Instead of shopping every week, we shopped every other week, (and picked up produce in between). On the weeks we didn't shop, the refrigerator was speeding it's way to empty! And I'm not kidding, but we NEVER went without food. My kiddos were healthy and growing, and their needs were ALWAYS met when it came to eating!

So what happened as a result of grocery shopping less? Nothing! Nothing bad, that is. Actually something good happened. That silver lining appeared.

~~~~~~~~~~silver lining~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Silver lining = gratitude! My kids became supportive as a result of adjusting to their new grocery budget. They never threw a fit or had a meltdown over wanting a fully stocked fridge. They never made me feel bad for not cooking large meals every night, and they never had an entitled attitude when it came to having a fully stocked kitchen. They accepted the way things were, knew they would be fed, and appreciated the food that was available to them. Gratitude. The silver lining that formed was gratitude.
In a world filled with instant gratification, gratitude is one priceless gift.
My kids aren't perfect, and neither am I. Yes, they ask for toys, video games, outings, and fast food, just like other kids do...and yes, there are times, I cave and buy the game or the french fries. It's a learning process, and it isn't always easy. But in my opinion, it's all about balance.
One of the greatest gifts my mother gave to my siblings and I growing up, was not to be materialistic, but to live a humble life, and to be happy with what you have. Thank you mom. I can only hope to pass along this very precious gift to my kids as well. Thank you kids for giving me the opportunity to be your mom.
I am grateful for moving, a safe neighborhood, a new school, Bentley, four parks, fresh air, riding bikes, new neighborhood friends, laughter, restricted budgets, grocery shopping, large meals, stocked kitchens, small meals, empty fridges, silver linings, grateful kids, my mom, and a humble life.
Yes, we are lucky. Gratitude.
Let's not forget being genuine, for that's important too. Trustworthiness is defined as being dependable, reliable, and deserving of trust. I might add being consistent in there somewhere as well. It would seem to me that honesty and trustworthiness are intertwined and complement each other well.
Have you ever had an experience dealing with someone who was extremely
dishonest?
I have. As a result of my interactions with that
person, walls went up, and a distance was formed and maintained. I felt
I couldn't trust that person, because I never knew what was the truth
and what was a lie.
Have you ever had an experience dealing with someone who was extremely honest? Again, I have. The most honest person I knew inspired me to also mirror that level of honesty back to them. You know what happened as a result of that honesty? A sense of trustworthiness was formed. Walls were down, filters gone, and I always knew I could trust whatever that person told me, because I always knew they would be honest in their interactions with me.
What an amazing gift it is to give and receive honesty to another person! But if this gift is so great, why do so many children and adults lie? Fear, anxiety, and insecurities may be some reasons. Perhaps people who lie often, have never experienced the benefits of true honesty and trustworthy behavior, so they can't understand the depths of what they are missing.
Honesty leading to trustworthiness is pure beauty, and something every person should experience. It's my hope that children experience this joy in their lives. Here are some positive ways to teach children to be honest, and therefore trustworthy people:
Focus on the positive. When you find a child has been honest, (regardless of what they have told you), always acknowledge and appreciate their honesty.
Set a good example. Children always learn best by watching authority figures in their life, so never underestimate the power of modeling truthful behavior.
Avoid labels. When you discuss lying often, or say things like, "Are you lying again?", children will begin to identify themselves as people who lie. Instead, create an atmosphere that encourages truthful behavior, and set that expectation.
Discuss ways to be a trustworthy and honest friend. Focus on specific behaviors that make a friend honest and trustworthy, such as keeping one's word, keeping safe promises, being reliable, following through on what one has said, and being consistent in one's behavior.
Understand the impact of your behavior on others. Teach children to be aware of how their behavior impacts others. A simple activity is to go to a library and be observant of those around you. When others are loud or disruptive, it makes it difficult to read or concentrate. When others are quiet and respectful, things feel peaceful and productive. Once children understand what it means to impact others, explain that lies impact others too. Lies cause complications and result in mistrust. On the positive side, being honest, leads to trust, and may encourage others to be an honest too.
Identify trustworthy people. This can be people in the community such as firemen, teachers, policemen, etc, or people in one's close circle, such as parents, and good friends. Discuss what makes these people trustworthy.
The idea of being a good citizen is powerful to kids. I remember being in first grade, and receiving a "good citizenship" award. After receiving this award in front of everyone
at a school assembly, all
the kids receiving awards and myself, were taken outside to be photographed with our awards. Our pictures were then proudly displayed in the cafeteria. I was so proud of that accomplishment, and it motivated me to continue to be a good citizen at school, and receive more awards in the years to come. Proof that positive reinforcement does work!
You may have had similar experiences as well, and as teachers and parents, we want our kids to also have those positive experiences. For when everyone is doing their part and being a good citizen, things run smoothly, kindness is spread, and learning is fostered.
When teaching citizenship, don't forget to keep these key definitions in mind:
Patriotism is defined as showing love and support for one's country.
Digital Citizenship is defined as appropriate and responsible behavior in regards to technology.
I have lots of ideas for teaching good citizenship, and here 6 to get you started:
Discuss famous good citizens. (Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, etc.) What made them good citizens?
Make a list of ways to show good citizenship. Include personal examples of good citizenship.
Brainstorm ways to give back to one's community or school. Ideas may include: planting a garden, cleaning up school grounds, helping those in need, etc.
Make classroom (or personal) rules together. Discuss the importance of each rule and general consequences.
Learn patriotic songs, poems, and read good citizen books. Encourage children to share these with others or in front of a class.
Visit a government official in the community, or have them visit your class. How does this person show good citizenship?
In addition to those ideas, I have created a Good Citizen Packet filled with activities, printables, posters, and awards, which may be found here.
Kids love to have fun and play, and most kids love sports! Adults love playing and watching sports too. Go to any school during recess time, and you will find many children engaged in some sort of sport. Go to any sports bar, during playoffs, and you will find lively entertainment. It's clear people of all ages love sports!
Sports aren't just fun to play and watch. They are also healthy and team building too. But what happens when good sportsmanship turns into bad sportsmanship, and tears, yells, and unhappy
voices are all that is heard? Yikes! That's enough to make any fun game go downhill fast. Unfortunately, not every child has good sportsmanship skills, and it's our job as adults to model and teach these skills. So
here are some ways to get the ball rolling...
1. Make a List Before playing a sport, make a list of rules with children about good sportsmanship. Some rules may include: Play with kindness. Take turns. Include everyone. Respect the coach and teammates. Follow the rules. End with a handshake, etc.
2. Be a Role Model Monkey see, monkey do, right? Children will watch and learn how to handle the world by watching those most important to them. Remember little eyes are on you and they are learning how to behave by watching your behavior.
3. Play Fair As much as one may want to win a game, winning a game under false pretenses isn't rewarding. Children will gain a sense of accomplishment from playing the right way.
4. Lose with Dignity Accepting defeat is never an easy pill to swallow, but teach a child this skill, and they will be stronger due to it. If they can be gracious to the other team, and learn to focus on the fun they had, they will learn how to handle frustration easier in others areas in their life.
5. Encourage Others Teach children to cheer others on, and focus on people's strengths, instead of weaknesses. When they pump others up, they contribute to good team morale, and ultimately feel good about themselves as well. It's a win-win!
6. Use Good Manners This includes conducting oneself in a polite manner as much as possible. Use appropriate language, tone of voice, and showing respect to everyone involved.
7. Focus on the Fun! Teach children not to make their main focus the score, winning or losing. Understand that the score if part of the game, but not what makes the game. Playing the game, teamwork, being active, learning new skills, and having fun, should be the main focus.
Now go have fun! And if you are looking for additional activities and printables that teach sportsmanship, check out my Sportsmanship Packet here!
After-all, who doesn't want to be heard? When we are heard, we may feel
validated, connected to others, and understood. When we are ignored,
we may feel forgotten, frustrated, or angry. So the simple solution
would be to listen to others, and act accordingly. But that may be
easier said than done. For being a good listener doesn't always come
naturally to everyone. So what gets in the way of practicing good
listening skills?
Distractions
Being stubborn/set in one's ways
Not being fully present
Uninterested in the topic of conversation
Feeling tired or unwell
Making judgements
Having a physical, mental, or behavioral impairment that makes listening to others more difficult
I believe that the key to happiness, both personally and professionally is rooted in the connections made to one another. When we feel connected, we are much more likely to understand, and get along well with others. This also applies to the relationship between teachers and their students, and parents and their children. Since we recognize it's a benefit to listen well to others, and feel heard, how do we teach this skill to children? These tips may help...
Give undivided attention
Remove distractions
Stay focused
Show
interest
Show curiosity
Show empathy
Don't interrupt
Think and care about what has been said
Ask questions
Practice active listening skills
Use body language
including: Leaning forward a little, providing eye contact, using appropriate facial expressions, nodding, not fidgeting, placing hands on laps or in packets, facing the person
And here are a few fun listening and focusing activities to try with kids...
Go on a listening field trip on school grounds, a park, or neighborhood. Record and discuss sounds heard.
Play attention, focus, and memory games. One game can be to show children items on a tray for a short period of time. Then put items away, and ask children to recall as much as they can.
Act out a listening story. Children have to pay close attention to what they hear and quietly act out the story as they hear it.
Those and other activities are discussed more in my Listening Skills Packet, which also includes printables, posters, awards, and more!
The packet I chose to highlight was respect. Why respect? Because respect is an essential social skill, and when people give and receive respect, amazing things can happen.
A good definition for kids may be the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. As adults, we know the importance of feeling heard and hearing others. When we are heard by others, we feel connected and understood. Empathy takes that one step further, as our feelings are not only heard, but also understood and shared by others. Empathy is powerful because it can comfort, calm, and diffuse intense situations. It helps others not to jump to conclusions and aids in people getting along. If we can teach this skill to our children, we can create more harmonious and peaceful
interactions. If a child is able to put themselves in another child's shoes, they may think twice before causing harm. And that is the goal, isn't it? Teaching children to be thoughtful people who care about and get along with others. Sometimes that goal is easier said than done. There will always be bumps in the road, but teaching children to be empathetic people is an important piece of the puzzle. Here are some tips to help teach children empathy:
Read - Read books with children that focus on another person's point of view and feelings.
Observe - Teach children to observe the person or situation they are trying to understand. They will gain insights into the situation through observation.
Remember - Encourage children to remember a time when they felt the same way as the person they are trying to understand.
Imagine - Encourage children to imagine how they would feel if they were that person. What would it be like to "walk in that person's shoes?"
Ask - Tell children to ask how that person feels.
Listen - Teach children how to actively listen. Some active listening skills include: Providing feedback to the person so they know you have heard them, using appropriate body language, and not interrupting.
Take Action - Encourage children to do something to show they care about the person.
Model - Model empathy in your interactions towards others and towards children.
Acceptance, diversity, peacefulness. Those are some ideas I like to focus on in my life, and with my children. Teaching acceptance and tolerance to children is important because we want them to respect the rights of others, while celebrating the
beauty and uniqueness in the world. I want my children to understand that others may have a different point view, life style, belief system or way of life. They may look different, sound different, dress different, talk different, and are indeed different. Regardless of any differences, people still have valid thoughts and human rights, and therefore should be respected. Teaching the concept of tolerance to children does not mean we are teaching children to tolerate bad choices, we are simply asking children to embrace and respect the beauty in others. At least, that is how I see it. This world is made up of uniqueness and differences. It is wonderful. Celebrating diversity and learning about differences is enlightening and powerful. Some ways to teach children about diversity include:
Research Heritage - Research one's own family tree/heritage. What similarities and differences may be seen throughout your own family?
Learn New Cultures -Learn about the culture of a friend with a different ethnic background. Ask questions.
Try New Foods - Try new ethnic foods. Go to authentic restaurants and make recipes on your own.
Encourage Beauty - Encourage children to see the beauty in those around them. Discuss ways others are uniquely beautiful and compliment others.
Read - Read (children) books focusing on tolerance, diversity, and peacefulness.
Research Leaders - Research famous leaders who have fought for the rights of others, (Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, etc.)
Attend an Ethnic Event - Attend a party, celebration, or ethnic event different from one's own ethnicity. A few ideas include: Bar Mitzvah, quincernera, Kwanza gathering, Indian Wedding, cultural fair or other celebration or event.
Discuss - Discuss ways that people may be different, (different cultures, different looks, different abilities, special needs, different beliefs, etc.)
Homeschooling parents wanting to kick up the look of their home-school area
Crayon Clock Tutorial
I recently came across a "crayon clock" (at least that is what I am calling it), and I immediately thought it would make a great teacher's gift. I was inspired to make one myself. I mean, how hard could it be? Lucky for you and me, it was EASY! In fact, it went so well, that I actually made three clocks for three different teachers. Since I didn't follow a tutorial, I made it up as I went, and this is what I came up with...
Materials
*Wooden Craft Hoops
*Crayons
Hot Glue Gun
Hot Glue Sticks
Clock
Scissors
*Wooden Craft hoops come in a variety of sizes. Determine the hoop size closest to the size of your clock.
*The size of the clock you use will determine the amount of crayons you need. A 10-12 inch clock will use about 100 crayons. If wanting to use a variety of colors, you may wish to purchase about 100 crayons to have options.
Step 1:
Determine the craft hoop size closest to the size of your clock, and separate the two hoops that are very close together. Determine how these hoops fit around the clock itself. You will not need to use the other set of hoops that came with the craft hoop.
The hoops I purchased were slightly smaller (about 1/2 inch) than the size of my actual clock. The larger hoop was easy enough to open up and make larger by removing the hardware connected to it. The smaller hoop did not have hardware, so I simply cut it using a sharp knife. It could then be opened to fit around the clock.
Step 2:
Hot glue the smaller hoop to the outside of the clock. Hot glue the slightly larger hoop on top of the smaller hoop. These loops make a "support wall" which the crayons lean against. You may hot glue the hoops anywhere on the clock desired. I chose to hot glue the hoops the width of a crayon from the edge of the clock face.
Step 3:
Cut the very ends of the crayons off so that only the crayon label is shown. The glue will stick well to the paper label itself, but will somewhat melt the crayon wax. Therefore, you want to avoid gluing the crayon wax directly, or you may end up with a messy project!
Step 4:
Determine your crayon color pattern, and make sure you have enough of what you need.
Step 5:
Glue the crayons to the support wall and to the clock.
Step 6:
Gently remove any hot glue strings, and clean clock face with a household cleaner. You are done!
While I aim to count my blessings all year long, this time of year seems to be particularly appropriate for thinking about thankfulness/gratitude. With November focusing on Thanksgiving, and December focusing on gift giving and receiving, it's the perfect time to teach the concept of gratitude to children. This Gratitude Packet is filled with activities, printables, awards, posters, and more, and is on sale now!
Feeling gratitude and not expressing it, is like wrapping a present and not giving it. -William Ward
Thankfulness, appreciation and acknowledgment are concepts that come to mind when thinking about how to teach children to be grateful people. In a world that sometimes lacks patience, and is focused on attaining instant
gratification, it's sometimes hard to stop and smell the roses. It may seem easier to do the fast thing, rather than do the thing that makes one feel most grateful. For example, it may seem easier to go through the drive-thru for a meal, rather than go shopping (with your children), and then go home to prepare a longer, yet healthier meal as a family. We are a society that moves quickly and doesn't have a lot of patience for even the simplest of things, like watching a commercial. I mean, why watch it when we can record the show and fast forward through the commercials instead? Life is about choices, and sometimes we choose instant gratification. Is that such a bad thing? I think it depends on the circumstance being considered. Regardless of our desire to have our needs met yesterday, gratitude should be expressed, valued, and taught to children.
Being grateful leads to a sense of happiness, contentment, and understanding. It eases our troubles, relaxes us, and decreases our stress. It's easy to get trapped inside our own bubble of day to day struggles. Choosing to be truly grateful, has great effects on our overall well-being. When we are at peace with what we have, we are able to give back to others in a genuine manner.
Teaching gratitude begins at a young age. As soon as children can talk, they are taught to be thankful. Teaching gratitude should be taught repeatedly in many different ways. Teaching a child to say thank you once is a good, but the child will likely not retain it. Teaching a child to say thank you each time something nice is done for them, and to understand why they are being thankful, will teach the child to be grateful over time.
Here are a some ways to get you started on how to teach children to be grateful people:
Write Thank You Notes - Teach children to write thank you notes to friends and family after receiving gifts.
Donate Items - Go through clothes and toys on a regular basis, and donate items to those in need. Do this with children, and don't wait for an unfortunate circumstance to arise before donating. Teachers may choose to ask children to bring in donations for those in need.
Sponsor a Child During the Holidays - During the holidays, adopt a child or family in need and provide food or toys to the family. Go shopping with children and let them pick out the items they want to donate to the child/family. Teachers may encourage children to participate in toy drives at school.
Donate Your Time - Visit a nursing home with children. Bring baked goods or pictures for the residents. Have children visit and read books to the residents.
Garden - Plant an edible garden to show gratitude to the earth. Share fruits and vegetables with neighbors, friends, and family.
Sweet Surprise - Go through a coffee drive-through with children, and pay for the person's order behind you.
Provide Work Opportunities - Expect children to work for their desires (toys, etc.). Parents may provide opportunities for children to make money. Once they have made the money needed, allow children to purchase their desired items with their own money. Students may earn "school money" to purchase items from a "school store".
Model - Model gratitude.
The list is truly endless. Ask children what they think are good ways to give back/express gratitude. Children always have the best ideas!
The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandness intention. -Oscar Wilde
Caring, gentleness, compassion, generosity, and patience may be some words that come to mind when thinking about kindness. Kindness may seem like such a simple and straight-forward concept, yet it may not always be an easy
act. It is my belief that most people have good intentions and kind hearts. However, misunderstandings, anger, and hurt feelings may be some reasons that interfere with one's ability to act in a kind manner. Learning calming down techniques, empathy, and seeing another person's point of view are some ways that encourage and lead to kind acts. In addition to one's temperament, another factor contributing to kindness, may be one's natural personality type. For example, some people are introverts and shy by nature. They may appear quiet and standoffish, when in reality, they just need a little more time to feel comfortable. They may be kind people, who are misunderstood.
Why is it important to teach kindness to children? I believe the key to success in life is rooted in living a happy and fulfilled life. We are all aware of social problems in school, such as bullying, and disrespect. If childhood problems like those are not properly dealt with, there is a risk children may grow up to be unhappy people, who may cause stress or pain to others. It's therefore important to model kind acts to children at a young age. For example, a parent may teach their child the importance of charity work by helping others in need. This may be modeled and done with the child through toy and clothing donations. The possibilities are endless when it comes to acts of kindness that children may participate in. Here are a few to get you started...
Do a chore for someone without them knowing.
Let someone go ahead of you in line.
Tell someone why they are special.
Bring flowers to your teacher.
Donate a book to a doctor's office.
Bring cookies to the custodian.
Invite someone new to play at recess.
Put change in a vending machine.
Make a homemade gift for someone.
Hold the door open for someone.
Hooray! Halloween is almost here! Over the years, I have decorated, participated in, and enjoyed many Halloween activities. Because time is of value, and because I work from home and take care of the needs of three little ones, my ideas and activities tend to be easy DIY. If you are anything like me, and looking for some easy Halloween tips, give these a try...
1. Cute Costume
Looking for an easy and fun costume idea? How about Cookie Monster? I purchased this cookie monster costume for my daughter one year, and paired it with cookie monster slippers. When Halloween was over, she wore her slippers throughout winter. I love making things easy and practical. Score! To compliment her, I purchased an inexpensive Cookie Monster adult t-shirt at a department store. Practical, and in case you were wondering...YES, I did wear this shirt on a regular basis! A blue wig, some inexpensive blue mittens, (which were worn again), added to the look and the costumes are good to go. To complete my daughter's look, I bought an extra cookie monster shirt and hot glued it to a plastic pumpkin treat holder. After all, every kid needs a Halloween trick or treat pail to hold all their goodies in. That completed this fun and easy look!
2. Freaky Food
Going to a Halloween Party? Need a quick and easy festive treat to share? Check out these spooky eyeballs! These were so easy to make. Purchase doughnut holes, chocolate chips, red icing, and white chocolate at your supermarket. Simply melt the white chocolate in a microwave and submerge one of the doughnut holes in it. Secure a skewer/food dowel of some sort into the doughnut hole, and push the other end into Styrofoam to hold in place. Push in one chocolate chip to make the pupil. After the chocolate has cooled down and become hard, draw red squiggly lines to resemble blood, and place in a spooky container. Store in a refrigerator until serving. Easy, yummy and fun!
3. Dreadful Decor
I recently helped a friend get ready for her annual Halloween party. Each year, this friend of mine, throws the best party! This year, my friend put me in charge of decorating her mantle. The black star is my favorite. I think it adds a little something extra. My easy
decorating tip is to use lots of pumpkins when decorating. My friend
just returned from the pumpkin patch and had lots of pumpkins on hand,
so I decided to incorporate them into the design. This picture shows the completed look.
Speaking of tips, here is a great party activity that takes place each year at her party. The children at her party trick-or-treat the rooms inside of her house. The adults and candy get distributed among various rooms/spaces throughout her house. First the kids decorate treat bags, and then tick-or-treat each space/room throughout her house. It's a lot of fun for both the kids and adults!
After you are done with the patch, why not let the kids paint their pumpkin? Don't get me wrong, carving a pumpkin, roasting seeds, and expressing your creativity, are always encouraged, but sometimes painting a pumpkin is a little more kid friendly. Just set the kids up with some paint, and let them get to work!
Looking to to add something spooky and unique to your party or Halloween decor? Remember my friend who hosted the Halloween party from idea #3? Well, this is another one of her brilliant concoctions. She fills various sized bottles with water and dyes the water with food coloring. Then, she adds pretend bugs and other creepy creatures to the bottles. She makes sure the bottle lids are painted to look appropriate, and attaches a spooky label to the front. She displays them on platters for the final effect. They are super interesting to look at, and fun for many ages.
I made another packet focusing on virtues! Hip hip hooray! That makes my fifth complete packet focusing on a virtue. My goal is to make 40 more packets. I am genuinely loving creating teaching materials focusing on character education. I recently wrote a blog post titled, "Teaching Children to Be Fair People". It takes a more in-depth look at fairness and can be read here.
This was a busy day! It started out with a first haircut for my 2 year old on a weekday. (We are on a modified year round schedule. This means it is our Fall Break right now, and we have 2 weeks off from school). My little one did great getting her first haircut! After that adventure, we met up with some friends and family at a local indoor bounce house facility. The kids has a blast playing and sliding down that super big slide!
My mother's neighborhood garage sale just took place, and we couldn't pass up the opportunity to get involved. My kids LOVE participating in garage sales because they LOVE setting up a "lemonade" type of stand and selling goodies. The day before the event, we baked lots of cookies and cupcakes. The kids made the baked goods independently, (under my supervision). I was a proud mama! In addition to making the baked goods, this opportunity provided a great opportunity for them to learn about money, politeness, and customer service. It was a great experience!
My mother raised her children with a strong sense of fairness and just. As adults, my siblings and I have remarked that things don't sit right with us if an unbalance, or an injustice is felt. Many people can relate, and yet others have
a different perspective on fairness. A close friend of mine, is at peace with life being unbalanced at times. The need to keep things fair isn't what drives this friend of mine. And then...there is my kid's perspective on fairness. This child of mine has a strong desire to keep things fair as much as humanly possible pretty much all of the time! As a mother, this can be a challenging task, because life simply isn't fair all the time. Learning to accept that not everything in life is fair, is a lesson in itself.
When thinking about fairness, such terms as equality, justice, balance, and equitableness come to mind. Perhaps a key to being at peace with fairness as a child, is to distinguish between keeping things fair, and keeping them equal. We all know there is a difference between the two, and once we accept that difference, understanding fairness comes more naturally.
I believe children benefit from establishing a proper sense of fairness. In order to do this, there needs to be an understanding that things do not need to be equal, in order to be fair. Fairness speaks to meeting the needs of others in a way that suits their needs, and is neither biased in a good or bad way. Making the distinction between things that are equal, and things that are fair is important. Providing examples of this distinction may be helpful when teaching this concept. For example, it would not be fair for a second grade student to be expected to complete the same type and amount of homework as a fifth grade student. Both children are elementary aged students, but they have different academic needs. Therefore, providing an equal amount and type of homework to both students, would result in an unfairness. To further the understanding of fairness, here are a few suggestions...
Role play situations regarding fairness and equality with children.
Provide opportunities that question fair verses equal circumstances. For example, reward two children for a job well done. Give one child (who loves sweet treats) a piece of candy. Give the other child (who prefers to play) a small toy. Explain that each child is getting their needs met by being rewarded by what best motivates them. Things do not have to be the the same in order to be fair.
Research or interview people with occupations that involve fairness. Examples include: judge, counselor, police officer, coach, teacher, etc.
Observe fair and unfair behavior in books and movies. Discuss possible solutions to unfair behaviors.
Play card, board, or physical activity games involving fairness. Model good choices, sportsmanship, and how to handle unfair situations.
Discuss class or house rules. Are the rules the same for everyone? Why or why not? Should they be the same? How does the concept of fairness relate to rules?
Model fairness.
In addition to the above suggestions, I created a fun and educational Fairness Packet that may be used by teachers, parents, school counselors, social workers, special education teachers, speech
therapists, and other specialists. Included in this packet are
activities, printables, posters, awards and more.
I did something completely unexpected the following Friday after school, and surprised the kids with a short getaway to Santa Cruz! I have never surprised the kids like this before, so it was fun to do. If you haven't been to Santa Cruz, there is a boardwalk, ocean, and amusement ride park. These pictures were taken on the boardwalk and playing on the beach.
